Piping Systems

Reproduced here is a rather comprehensive article written by Mr. Kurt Lind, a product manager for George Fischer Inc., a premier manufacturer of plastic pipe, valves, and fittings. I would like to expand on a couple of points for piping installation which were not addressed by Mr. Lind.

Both PVC and CPVC are best joined by the solvent cementing method. This method allows for the lowest chance for leakage. We advise that a 24 hour drying time is used for joints to reduce the possibility of leaks forming.

Another common problem in piping systems handling this material is exposure to UV light. It is recommended to paint over the piping with latex based paint to prevent the Hypochlorite from reacting with the UV. Symptoms of this occurance are a frosty discoloration of the plastic, and increased brittleness.
